Implementing the tri-agency research data management policy

Please save the date for institutional cohorts from Canadian post-secondary institutions to participate in a two-and-a-half day workshop “Building an Inter-Institutional and Cross-Functional Research Data Management Community: From Strategy to Implementation.” This in-person event will be offered from September 27-29, 2023 at the University of Waterloo, Ontario, and has been made possible in part by generous support from the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada.

The workshop aims to facilitate inter-institutional collaboration on Research Data Management (RDM) programs by selecting teams from Canadian post-secondary institutions, comprised of up to three individuals from each: a research administrator, an IT professional, and a librarian, who can articulate both their RDM strategies, as well as the challenges and successes that they have encountered on each of their campuses. In addition, we will select researchers – and have bursaries available for them – to share their own experiences with RDM.

If you have questions about participation please contact Ian Milligan, Associate Vice-President, Research Oversight and Analysis, University of Waterloo.

Background

With the release of the Tri-Agency Research Data Management Policy in March 2021, Canadian post-secondary institutions were required to develop and post institutional RDM strategies by March 1 2023. With Canadian Institutional Strategies now available, and Data Management Plans (DMPs) being piloted in a series of competitions across the Tri-Agencies, Canadian institutions now need to focus on the implementation of these strategies. Research data management, done well, sets researchers up for success and can help to foster research excellence. Well-developed research data management programs will provide Canadian researchers with a competitive and collaborative advantage in research, which in turn supports Canadian economic and social well-being.
